Solar Oil Rig - Physics Demonstrations - Solar Oil Rig | Physics Undergraduate Labs

Incandescent lamps can become very hot during operation. Allow adequate cooling time before handling and position the lamp where students cannot accidentally touch it. Ensure the lamp is stable and cannot tip over during the demonstration.

Purpose

Demonstrates photovoltaic energy conversion using a solar cell to power a toy oil rig from a lamp. Students observe the conversion chain from light to electrical to mechanical energy. The ironic juxtaposition of solar power driving an oil rig makes a memorable entry point for energy discussions.
