Safety Warnings
The alcohol flame and heated metal components present burn hazards. Keep flammable materials away from the engine during operation. The hot-end cylinder can exceed 200°C (400°F). Always use the snuffer to extinguish the flame—never blow on it or attempt to smother with paper. Allow adequate cooling time before handling any engine components.
Use only denatured alcohol or methanol as fuel. Never use gasoline, lighter fluid, or other volatile fuels. Store fuel in properly labeled containers away from heat sources. Clean up any spills immediately and ensure proper ventilation during operation.
Purpose
A small alcohol-fired Stirling engine demonstrates heat engine operation: cycling hot and cold pistons convert a temperature difference into continuous mechanical work. Students see the Second Law in action — not all heat input becomes work.
