Eclipses
Safety Warnings
Warning: Hot Lamp Surface
Purpose
Models the Sun-Earth-Moon geometry for solar and lunar eclipses using a lamp, globe, and spheres. Students see how alignment creates umbra and penumbra shadow zones, and why eclipses don't occur every month (the Moon's 5° orbital inclination).
Figure 1:
Eclipse geometry setup: a globe (Earth) with two white spheres (Moon) on clamp stands positioned on either side. A light source (Sun, off-frame) illuminates the arrangement, casting a visible shadow on the globe.
