Eddy Currents: Copper Tube
Safety Warnings
Warning: Magnetic Field Awareness
Purpose
A neodymium magnet falls slowly through a copper tube (~10 seconds for 61 cm) while pennies drop in under a second, dramatically demonstrating Lenz's law and eddy current braking.
Figure 1:
Two copper tubes (one with viewing holes spaced every 5-6 cm for tracking the magnet), a penny for the control drop, and the neodymium disk magnet.
