Induction Heating
Safety Warnings
Warning: High Temperature Hazard
Warning: Electrical Safety
Warning: Lead Handling
Purpose
A 250-turn coil induces current in a lead wire loop seated in an iron ring, melting the lead in ~30 seconds through \(I^2R\) heating. Dramatically demonstrates power transfer via electromagnetic induction with a single-turn secondary.
Figure 1:
Setup before energizing: 250-turn primary coil (left), iron core, and iron ring with wooden handle (right) positioned to drain into the enamel tray.
Figure 2:
After ~30 seconds, the induced current melted the lead wire, which drained into the tray.
