Seebeck Effect Oersted's Experiment
Safety Warnings
Warning: Open Flame Hazard
Warning: Hot Metal Surface
Purpose
Combines the Seebeck effect with Oersted's experiment: heating a copper-constantan thermocouple junction generates a current whose magnetic field flips a compass needle 180°. Demonstrates energy conversion from thermal to electrical to magnetic.
Figure 1:
The Seebeck effect apparatus: propane torch heats one junction of the copper-constantan thermocouple loop while the other junction is cooled in ice water. The compass needle near the loop detects the resulting current.
