Purpose
A 2D array of magnetic needles on bearing pins models ferromagnetic domains. Students see how dipoles spontaneously form domains, how domain walls shift under an applied field, and how the array retains magnetization after the field is removed (hysteresis).
Figure 1:
The magnetic needle array in the absence of an external field shows spontaneous formation of magnetic domains with different orientations, modeling the demagnetized state of a ferromagnetic material.
Figure 2:
When a bar magnet is placed near the array, domains align with the external field through domain wall motion and rotation, demonstrating the magnetization process and domain growth.
