Bicycle Wheels

Ensure the demonstrator has good balance before stepping onto the rotating platform. Have someone nearby to assist if needed. The platform should be on a level surface and tested for smooth operation before use.

Rapidly spinning wheels can cause injury if they strike someone or if fingers get caught in spokes. Maintain clear space around demonstrations. When using the drill motor, wear safety glasses and ensure the drill is secure. Do not spin wheels faster than necessary for the demonstration.

Purpose

Demonstrates angular momentum conservation, gyroscopic precession, and resistance to axis reorientation. Students observe how angular momentum transfers between a spinning wheel and a person on a rotating platform, making the vector nature of rotational motion tangible.
