Coil, Magnet, and LEDs
Safety Warnings
Warning: Strong Magnet Handling
Purpose
Demonstrates Faraday's law by dropping a magnet through a coil connected to two oppositely-oriented LEDs. Students see that increasing and decreasing flux produce currents in opposite directions, and that reversing the magnet reverses the LED sequence.
Figure 1:
Complete setup: induction coil clamped vertically with eggshell foam below to catch the magnet, connected to breadboard with two oppositely-oriented LEDs.
Figure 2:
Strong magnet positioned at the top of the coil, ready to drop. The magnet should sit just inside the opening before release.
Figure 3:
Magnet after passing through the coil, caught by the eggshell foam below.
Figure 4:
Breadboard with two LEDs wired in opposite directions. Each LED lights only for one polarity of induced current.
